Formerly the capital town of the Siddhis of Janjira, Murud is today popular for its alluring beaches, whispering casuarina, coconut and betel palms and an ancient fort. Approximately 165 kms. by road from Mumbai, Murud is a quiet palm-fringed coastline. On a hillock to the north is the shrine of Lord Dattatraya, his three heads representing Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara. The 300 year old fort of Janjira is an architectural marvel and was once upon a time considered to be impregnable. The palace of the Nawab, two unsung beaches: Nandgaon and Kashid, the former famous for its Ganpati Temple and annual fair in February are a few other attractions.
Garambi Lake : This is a 100 year old tank that supplies water to the townships. A few kms away are the two beautiful beaches of Nandgaon and Kashid. Virtually anonymous, they offer great fun for surf lovers

Janjira Fort

This is impregnable fort had a formidable reputation of not being impregnated by Dutch, British or the Maratha before them. Built on an island three kilometers from Murud, the fort is famous for its impregnable walls that were ruled by Muslim Sidhi community, an Afro Asiatic tribe from North Africa.
Built first by Koli fishermen of the area, it was captured by Sidhis by secrecy. It served as a point to safeguard the Arab sea trade links. The fort has 19 burj in the fort. Every burj has huge guns on it especially three big guns ‘Kalal Bangadi’ , ‘Chavari’ and ‘Landa Kasam’ are very famous.
